Himachal affected by Extreme heat wave: Even snow is melting, tourist season fades away
A heat wave is expected to persist in the mid-hills and low hills/plain areas of Himachal Pradesh on May 28 and 29, 2024, continuing in the low hills/plain areas on May 30, 2024. Isolated rainfall activities are anticipated to start in the mid and high hills from May 30, 2024, and in the low hills/plain areas from June 1, 2024.

Today in Himachal Pradesh, Shimla will experience mostly clear skies. A heat wave is likely to occur in isolated places across the districts of Una, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, Hamirpur, Solan, Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, and Kangra, with a yellow alert issued for these areas. No significant weather events are expected across the state today.

Over the past 24 hours, Himachal Pradesh experienced dry weather. The lower hills, including Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur, and parts of Mandi, Solan, and Sirmaur, remained dry. The middle hills, such as Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Mandi, also saw dry conditions, as did the higher hills of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, and Kullu. Temperatures were higher than usual both during the day and night. Kukumseri recorded the lowest temperature at 7.4°C, while Una was the hottest at 44.0°C. Heatwave conditions were reported in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Una. A new western cyclonic disturbance is expected to impact northwest India starting May 30, 2024.
Today, there was no snowfall in any part of Himachal Pradesh, but Manali received 1mm of rain. Rainfall is expected to increase from May 30, 2024, due to the western cyclonic disturbance.

Keylong was the coolest place today with a temperature of 20°C and a 99% chance of rain. Kufri was warmer at 23.2°C with a 19% chance of rain. Shimla recorded 29.6°C with a 14% chance of rain. Chamba and Sundernagar were quite warm, at 40.4°C, both with a moderate chance of rain. Kangra was the hottest at 40.2°C but had only a 1% chance of rain.

As of May 28, 2024, at 08:00 hours, the weather conditions across Lahaul and Spiti are clear with no snow depth reported. The road status is generally favorable, with most routes open and accessible. Keylong, Kaza, Sumdo, Udaipur, Tindi, Sissu, and both the North and South Portals are experiencing clear weather and open roads. However, the road from Losar to Gramphu is closed due to current weather conditions. The Darcha-Shinkula-Padum-Kargil route is open as per the weather advisory, and the Darcha-Sarchu road is also open following similar guidelines. Travelers are advised to check weather updates and road advisories before traveling on the SCP Darcha to Shinkula/Sarchu road.
