For this reason she is also called Padmasana Devi. The lion is her conveyance. Being the mother of Kartikeya, this fifth form of the goddess is known as Skandamata. Shaktipeeth Chamunda Devi Temple is located in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Shaktipeeth Shri Chamunda Devi Temple is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. Mother Chamunda Devi is seen second among the nine goddesses of North India. It is believed that all the wishes of the devotees who come to Shaktipeeth Shri Chamunda Devi are fulfilled. Chamunda Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. Mother Kali is the goddess of power and destruction. Whenever there has been any crisis on earth, Mother has destroyed the demons. Mother’s name was Chamunda due to the destruction of demon Chanda-Munda. It is also believed that when Mata Sati’s body was dismembered, some part of Mata’s feet fell on Chamunda Devi, after which Chamunda Shaktipeeth was built here.

Thousands of years ago the demons had defeated the gods in war. After which two demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha ruled the earth. Shumbha and Nishumbha started torturing the earth with his demonic powers, due to which the gods worried and worshiped Goddess Durga. Goddess Durga was pleased and gave a boon to all the gods that she would protect them from the demons.

One day the demons Chanda and Mund came to the Himalayan Mountains and were fascinated by the beautiful form of Goddess Ambe. Chanda and Mund went to the goddess and told the demon king that you are the king of all the three worlds, here all the priceless gems are adorned, so you should also have such a divine and attractive woman who is the most beautiful in all the three worlds. Hearing these words, Shumbh started saying to Mata Ambe that I, Shumbh, am the king of all three worlds and I want to make you my queen. Hearing this, Mata Ambe said that I will marry the person who defeats me in the war.

Hearing this, Shumbha became angry and sent two demons named Chanda-Munda along with Raktabeej and said to bring the mother before us, alive or dead. Chanda-Munda went to the mother and started fighting with the mother. Then the goddess took the form of Mahakali and killed Chanda-Munda and cut off their heads and threaded them in her garland. Since then the mother is known as Chamunda Devi.
