New Parliament inauguration: PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament House today. On this occasion, he installed the sacred Sengol in the Lok Sabha chamber. The scepter, which was installed by Modi in Parliament, was first given to the then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten in 1947 on behalf of Tamil Nadu’s Adhinam. From him, Sengol was handed over to the then first PM Jawaharlal Nehru.

After this Sengol was given to Jawaharlal Nehru, no information about it was made public. No one knew where Sengol was. Famous dancer Padma Subrahmanyam did a lot of research and then informed PM Modi that Jawaharlal Nehru was handed over Sengol by the priests of Adhinam at 10.45 pm on August 14, 1947. After this the search started. It was learned about Sengol that it was kept in the museum built at Anand Bhawan of the Nehru family in Prayagraj (earlier Allahabad). There it was being displayed as Nehru’s golden walking stick i.e. Nehruji’s stick.

Lord Mountbatten asked Nehruji what he would like to receive as a symbol of the transfer of power. On this, Nehruji asked C. Rajagopalachari, the first Governor General of independent India. He looked at the texts about it. Then asked to make Tamil Nadu’s Adhinam Sengol. Adhinam made this sengol and sent it to Delhi. By the way, there has been a tradition of scepter in ancient India. A ruler used to give the scepter while handing over power to another. This was called Sengol in South India. During the time of Chola kings, there was a tradition of handing over sengol. Now a similar Sengol has been installed in the Lok Sabha Chamber of the new Parliament House of India.
