A parliamentary committee warned the British government on Wednesday that if the restoration project of the Palace of Westminster is delayed, a catastrophic disaster could lead to the collapse and destruction of the 147-year-old complex.

The Palace of Westminster houses the British Parliament, which is an architectural masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

However, British lawmakers said the structure is also asbestos-filled, leaky, and at “real and growing” risk of collapse.

After decades of broad agreement on the critical need to repair and restore Westminster Palace, progress has been very slow, with “years of procrastination” and key parliamentary decisions being reopened and overturned, the Public Accounts Committee said in a report. The committee says that, to date, the focus has been on Members of Parliament rather than the thousands of staff and visitors who use the building.
