Bangladesh will no longer provide extra security cover to the Indian Embassy convoy and top diplomats. The decision was announced by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Abdul Momen on Tuesday. Momen has said – We cannot spend our taxpayers’ money to provide additional security to diplomats.

Apart from India, extra security will also be withdrawn from the ambassadors of America, Saudi and Britain. However, the usual safety protocols will continue to be followed. According to the Dhaka Tribune, a letter regarding this decision has been sent to all the four embassies only last week.

Bangladesh has given the reason for withdrawing the extra security. According to the Dhaka Police Commissioner, apart from the four countries, other embassies had also started demanding extra cover. At the same time, according to the news agency PTI, this decision has also been taken due to lack of manpower with the Dhaka Police.

According to the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh, if any embassy wants extra cover, then it can take such service by paying money to private companies. The Indian Embassy in Dhaka is yet to comment on the issue. On the other hand, when a journalist asked Momen whether this decision would spoil Bangladesh’s relations with those countries, Momen replied, “I don’t think anything like this will happen.”
