The counting of votes for the Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023 is underway. In the first 1 hour trends, the Congress seems to be inching closer to the majority figure. BJP is on the second number, trailing by 20 seats. JDS is leading in two dozen seats. Others are also leading on 3 seats. JDS is in third place, but is leading in so many seats that if it wins, Hung can play the role of kingmaker in the event of an assembly. There are a total of 224 assembly seats in Karnataka and the majority figure is 113. Top Leaders – State Chief Minister and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai leading from Shiggaon, Congress leader Siddaramaiah leading from Varuna, DK Shivakumar leading from Kanakapura.

In the 2018 assembly elections in Karnataka, the BJP was the single largest party by winning 104 seats, followed by the Congress with 80 seats and the JD(S) with 37 seats. One independent candidate, 1-1 candidate of BSP and Karnataka Pragyavantha Janata Party also won. In the 2018 election, the Congress had secured 38.04 per cent vote-share, followed by the BJP (36.22 per cent) and the JD(S) (18.36 per cent). In the event of no party getting a clear majority, Congress and JD(S) formed a coalition government and HD Kumaraswamy became the Chief Minister. But after 14 months, the coalition government fell due to 17 MLAs leaving and joining BJP and BJP returned to power.
