Poland to ‘temporarily’ prohibit grain, other food imports from Ukraine

Poland‘s government has temporarily banned the import of grain and other food from Ukraine in a bid to calm farmers’ anger. The government of Poland gave this information on Saturday.

Farmers say that they are suffering huge losses due to glut of Ukrainian grain in the market.

Ruling party leader Jarosław Kaczynski told a party conference in eastern Poland that Poland was “facing a crisis in the countryside”. Although Poland supports Ukraine, it had to act to save its farmers.

“Today, the government decided on a regulation that bans the import of dozens of other types of food into Poland, including cereals,” he said.

The government announced that the ban on imports would remain in place until June 30. Items banned for import include sugar, eggs, meat, milk and other dairy products, and fruits and vegetables.

Apart from Poland, a similar situation has started appearing in other neighboring countries as well. In these countries, local farmers are facing huge losses due to imported food products from Ukraine.

“Imports of agricultural products from Ukraine are causing huge dislocations in local markets, causing heavy losses to producers,” Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus told agriculture ministers from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary this week And social instability is happening.”
