Global goal of reaching net zero by 2050 requires enhanced descaling of emissions by developed countries: Bhupender Yadav
Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav on Saturday said that the global goal of reaching net zero by 2050 requires reduction in emissions by developed countries.
The minister said that it will provide space for countries like India to achieve the development needed for its people, which will provide necessary defense against the effects of climate change, environmental degradation and pollution.
The minister was addressing a plenary session at the G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment in Sapporo, Japan.
According to a release issued by the Union Environment Ministry, the Union Environment Minister said that the IPCC AR 6 report emphasizes that development is our first defense against climate change.
The Sixth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the sixth in a series of reports that assess the scientific, technical and socio-economic information related to climate change.
“The report reinforces the scientific view that CO2 is the primary GHG that needs to be reduced significantly to achieve the global temperature target as agreed in the Paris Agreement,” Yadav said.
According to Yadav, since the advent of the Industrial Revolution, there has been a highly disproportionate emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to achieve economic growth and development. He said that excessive exploitation of natural resources has also caused extensive damage to the environment.
This has come at the cost of changing the balance of nature, he said, posing a serious threat to the very existence of planet Earth.
The minister said that to save the planet from the challenges of climate change, pollution, loss of biodiversity, we need collective action guided by the founding principles of Rio conventions.
He said that we have collectively made some progress through the process of UNFCCC, CBD and UNCCD. However, greater action is urgently needed to tackle the three challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
The Union Minister said that developing countries also need the means of implementation, finance and technology. We hope that developed countries will fulfill their commitments on finance to combat climate change and make it available to combat environmental degradation and biodiversity loss, according to an official release.
Yadav said that reaching the targets on carbon neutrality and increased ambition will not be complete unless they are made keeping in mind equity and CBDR-RCs and also unless developed countries are able to provide the means of implementation. Don’t fulfill your commitments.
Yadav said that our actions so far have been focused on creating a policy framework to deal with climate change. It is time that governments across the world focus on making it a participatory process at the level of individuals.
