National Martyr’s Day or the Shaheed Diwas, is celebrated as a day of remembrance of all the freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the independence of the country. 30th January is celebrated as National Martyr’s Day. This was the day when, Gandhi Ji, the father of the nation, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. This day is, internationally celebrated as the Day of Non-Violence and Peace.

  • On this day the President, the Vice President, the Prime Minister, the Defence Minister, and the Chief of Defence Staff visit the Samadhi, at Raj Ghat.
  • Bugles are blown sounding the Last Post, by the army personnel. 
  • A 2-minute silence observed in the memory of all the Indian Martyrs is observed all across the country at 11 am. 
  • Prayers at the Birla House, in the evening, where Gandhi Ji was shot. 

THE BIRLA HOUSE EVENT

The father of the nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was assassinated on 30th January 1948 by Nathuram Godse at the Birla House at 11 am. He shot 3 bullets at the father of the nation. The last words from the mouth of Mahatma Gandhi Ji were believed to be, “Hé! Rāma” meaning “O! God”. Since then, this day is celebrated as National Martyr’s Day.
