Maa Katyayani

Today is the sixth day of Sharadiya Navratri, i.e. today Maa Katyayani is worshipped. Maa Katyayani is considered to be the sixth form among the nine forms of Durga. By worshipping Maa Katyayani, a man gets all the four results of wealth, religion, work, salvation. He becomes endowed with supernatural brilliance and influence even while living in this world.

Maa’s form
The form of Mother Katyayani is that of the slayer of the tyrannical demon Mahishasura. Goddess Katyayani has three eyes and four hands. She has a sword in her left hand and a lotus in the other hand. Her right hands can be seen in Varada Mudra (giver of boons) and Abhaya Mudra (representing fear removal, benevolence and protection). With the grace of the crescent on her forehead, Goddess Katyayani rides a lion.

Know why Maa Katyayani is worshipped in the sixth form

According to the mythological story, Maharishi Katyayan was an ardent devotee of Maa Durga. He performed rigorous penance of Maa Bhagwati to get a child. Pleased with his penance, Maa gave darshan to Maharishi Katyayan. Sage Katyayan expressed his wish in front of Maa, on which Maa Bhagwati promised him that she would be born as a daughter in his house. Once the atrocities of a demon named Mahishasur were increasing day by day in all the three worlds. Then the Goddess was created from the brilliance of Tridev – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh i.e. Lord Shiva, who was born in the house of Maharishi Katyayan. Being born in the house of Maharishi Katyayan, she was named Katyayani. After being born as a daughter in the house, Sage Katyayan used to worship Maa Katyayani on Saptami, Ashtami and Navami Tithi. After this, Maa Katyayani killed Mahishasura on the day of Dashami and freed the three worlds from his atrocities. Since then Maa Katyayani is worshipped in the sixth form.
