Warning By Russia On World War 3 ?
Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has warned that any third world war would be “nuclear and destructive”. This warning comes as tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to rise. Lavrov also expressed concern that Russia would face a “real danger” if Ukraine acquired nuclear weapons. His comments come after Vladimir Putin put Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on high alert, citing “aggressive statements” by NATO and tough financial sanctions.
The warning of a possible nuclear war follows a message from Putin, who warned that anyone who tries to “hinder” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will face “consequences you have never seen in your history”. The international community has expressed concerns over Russia’s nuclear arsenal, which is believed to be the largest in the world with an estimated 6,255 warheads, exceeding the US’s arsenal of approximately 5,500.
The situation between Ukraine and Russia continued to escalate as Lavrov spoke at the Disarmament Conference on Tuesday. Lavrov assured the conference that every measure was being taken to ensure that Ukraine did not secure a nuclear arsenal. However, the risk of a devastating nuclear war increased last week when Putin put Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on high alert, citing “aggressive statements” by NATO and tough financial sanctions.
The situation has sparked fears in the international community, with many expressing concern over the potential consequences of a nuclear conflict. The UN envoy to the Human Rights Council, Michele Taylor, noted that “This Russian war of aggression will have profound implications for human rights in Ukraine and Russia, and the leaders of Russia will be held accountable.”
In response to the situation, neutral Switzerland imposed financial sanctions on Lavrov.
Additionally, several UN diplomats walked out of the conference in protest of Lavrov’s comments. The Canadian Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly, stated that she and her colleagues wanted to show a “very strong stance together,” as Lavrov’s version of events was believed to be “false”.
As tensions continue to escalate between Russia and Ukraine, the international community remains on high alert in the face of the potential for a nuclear conflict.
