Shimla – Himachal Pradesh Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh has addressed the concerns raised by the Congress high command after his recent comments on the street vendors issue. Singh clarified that there is a misconception about Himachal Pradesh following the Uttar Pradesh model with regard to street vendors rules. He assured that a multi-party committee constituted by the Assembly Speaker will discuss all issues related to street vendors on October 3.

The controversy erupted after Singh’s comments about making it mandatory for street vendors to display identity cards were opposed by some top Congress leaders. Singh was reminded by the high command that no individual within the party can go against Congress policies and ideologies. A meeting was held on Friday with Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, who reiterated the party’s belief in Rahul Gandhi’s philosophy of countering hate with love.

In an interview, Singh described the situation as an issue created by the media, which was blown out of proportion. “I have assured Venugopal that we are dedicated and loyal soldiers of the party and will not work against the party line. However, the state government should also ensure law and order by following the directions of the High Court and Supreme Court on urban livelihoods,” he said.

Singh stressed that the street vending policy in Himachal Pradesh is based on existing legal directions and not on the policies of Uttar Pradesh, which were struck down by the Supreme Court. He reiterated that registration of street vendors is necessary to maintain order and ensure security, saying Aadhaar cards or GST numbers should be recorded to deal with any potential law and order situation.

Amid criticism of his previous comments, Singh clarified, “The idea of following the UP model in Himachal is a misconception. Himachal has its own legal framework and we are implementing the law accordingly.”

The Public Works Minister also assured the high command that the Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu-led government in Himachal Pradesh is committed to the welfare of the people and maintaining harmony. He said the street vending issue would be discussed in the multi-party committee meeting to be held on October 3, where solutions would be sought for demarcation and verification of vending zones.
