Vasant Panchami also called Saraswati Puja is on the 26th of January, this year. This festival marks the beginning of spring. Vasant Panchami is celebrated mostly by Hindus. This festival has historical importance for Sikhs. This festival is done in the honor of Hindu goddess Saraswati, who is believed to be the goddess of knowledge, language, music, and all art forms.

Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of the bright half month according to the Hindu calendar, Magha. This lies at the end of January and the beginning of February. This festival marks the arrival of spring but also marks the preparation for Holika and Holi. Holi is expected to be forty days after Vasant Panchami. It is celebrated in different ways in different regions according to their culture.

CELEBRATION 

HINDUS

Vasant Panchami is celebrated by Hindus, marking the beginning of the spring season. It also symbolizes the arrival of Holi, which comes after forty days of Vasant Panchami. In this festival honor to Goddess Saraswati is given. She symbolized love and all forms of creative energy and power. This festival also marks the ripening of agricultural fields with the yellow flower of mustard. Hindus associate this with Saraswati’s favorite color. People on this day yellow color clothes, yellow saris, and kurtas. They mostly make sweets and snacks which are yellow, some even saffron to the rice and eat it as part of the festival.

SIKHS

Vasant Panchami or Basant Panchami is historically celebrated by Sikhs. They celebrate it as a spring festival, by wearing yellow clothes and flying kites. The celebration of Basant Panchami as a social festival was encouraged by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founder of the Sikh empire. He used to sponsor the Basant Panchami festival annually. He used to have regular kite-flying competitions at this festival. Maharaja along with his wife wore yellow colored clothes and participate in the kite competition. He also held a ten-day Darbar in his palace. In this darbar, all the soldiers dress up in yellow color clothes and display their power. 

EAST INDIA

In the states of West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam as well as in Nepal, Saraswati puja is done on this day. People visit Swarawati Temples or do puja at home. In Bengal, Vanasat Panchami is an important festival for Bengali Hindus also. 

In Orissa, Vasant Panchami is known as Basant Panchami or Sri Panchami. On this day various Yagnas are done. All the schools also arrange for Saraswati Puja. All students and children take part in the rituals. 

BANGLADESH

Similarly, in Bangladesh, Vasant Panchami is also celebrated. In the honor of goddess Saraswati, puja and rituals are performed. 

PAKISTAN

Kite flying is part of Pakistan for Centuries. Even after the formation of Pakistan various kite flying competitions take place in Pakistan. They celebrate Basant by flying kites and various kite flying competitions are held in this season.

MODERN-DAY INDIA 

 Even in modern-day, India, Vasant Panchami has its importance. Toady also various staed and a large number of people celebrate this festival in its original way with all rituals. This festival in modern cities marks the end of the winter season and the beginning of the spring or summer season
