US Must Embrace India as Gateway to Global South, says Expert
- Akhil Ramesh, a fellow with the Pacific Forum, argues in a report for The Hill newspaper that it is about time for the US to shift its focus towards the needs of the Global South, with India as a crucial partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
- Ramesh argues that the US should start viewing its partnership with India as a gateway to the Global South and pay more attention to the needs of developing nations. The report in The Hill notes that both India and China, formerly aid recipients, are now emerging as aid providers and are coveted by global powers. If the US can accept India’s strategic autonomy, it may be better positioned to understand and address the needs of the Global South.
- In 2023, there are emerging superpowers and regional powers that have shifted the global landscape. However, back in the 1970s and 80s, both India and China were facing various challenges. India, led by Indira Gandhi, had to address issues such as poverty, supporting state-run corporations, and allocating funds for defence against China and Pakistan, often relying on debt. China faced a similar situation during that time.
- Ramesh argues that while Russia and the US are seeking the involvement of emerging powers, China and India are competing for leadership of the Global South in a multipolar world. However, unlike Russia, the US is still struggling to prioritize needs over values and is hesitant to forge partnerships with countries that do not adhere to the “liberal democracy” mould. This approach is hindering Washington’s ability to embrace partnerships with countries in the Global South, according to Ramesh’s article in The Hill.
- According to Ramesh, China is taking on the role of mediator in conflicts between long-time adversaries like Saudi Arabia and Iran, while Moscow is following China’s lead by facilitating talks between Syria and Saudi Arabia. Russia appears to have recognized the actions it needs to take as a declining power. However, Harvard Professor Stephen Walt argues that the Biden administration is pursuing a unipolar world order that no longer exists.
