Best of Virat and De Villier’s

The 2016 season will always be known for the amazing batsmanship by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. The Royal Challengers Bangalore were down and out when they lost to the Mumbai Indians at their home ground and they needed to win four matches in a row to qualify for the play-offs. In their very next match, Kohli and De Villiers recorded a partnership of 229 runs best stand in the IPL against Gujarat Lions and set the ball rolling for RCB.

RCB Performance

The Royal Challengers Bangalore continued their great run and made it five wins in a row, when they beat Gujarat Lions in the first qualifying match. First, the bowlers put up an excellent performance to bundle Gujarat for 158 runs and then AB de Villiers played a masterclass innings of 79 runs from 47 balls to help RCB win by four wickets. The Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling attack showed their class once again when they defended a total of 162 against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the eliminator match.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli and South African batting legend AB de Villiers played extraordinary innings for Royals Challengers Bangalore RCB on this day in 2016. The two superstars forged a partnership of 229 runs off just 97 balls, providing a mouth-watering treat to fans at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru.

Gujarat’s Performance

RCB was playing against the now-defunct Gujarat Lions, who had won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Having been deflated in the first session itself, Gujarat Lions capitulated to a meagre 104 all out in 18. 4 overs with Chris Jordan picking up 4 in 11 in 3 overs and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal getting 3 in 19 in 4 overs. With 10 points from 11 games and a positive net run-rate of 0. 627, RCB will fancy their chances of sneaking in as the third or fourth team into the play-offs by winning all their remaining three games.

Meanwhile, when Gujarat batsmen came to bat in the second innings it looked like they have shifted to a different pitch all together because the batsmen were struggling to put away balls for runs. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Gujarat Lions somehow managed to cross the 100-run mark and were bowled out for 104 runs.

Partnership

In all, the duo hit an astounding 20 sixes compared to 15 fours as the square boundary of the Chinnaswamy turf looked too small at times. The start was not that great for RCB as an out-of-touch Chris Gayle 6 played on to a Dhawal Kulkarni delivery. The RCB captain was cautious to begin with and it was De Villiers who was first to get off the blocks with a flurry of sixes.
