Mysuru Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a goods train at Kavaraippettai railway station.
Chennai: A passenger train running at a speed of 75 kmph collided with a stationary freight train in Tamil Nadu at around 8:30 pm on Friday. Railway officials said the train moved to the loop line instead of the main line, following which at least 12 coaches derailed, injuring several passengers. A power car also caught fire. Train 12578 Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a freight train at Kavaraipettai railway station in Tiruvallur district near Chennai.
Tiruvallur District Collector Dr. T. Prabhushankar said the train was carrying 1,360 passengers. It is being reported that 19 passengers were injured, of which four were seriously injured. He said they were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. There are no reports of any casualties so far.
After midnight, the stranded passengers were transported to Dr MGR Chennai Central railway station by MTC buses. Early in the morning, a special train left from Dr MGR Chennai Central, which took the stranded passengers to their destination. The passengers were provided with food and water.
Speaking about the unfortunate incident, Southern Railway General Manager R N Singh said, “The train was going towards Gudur and further towards Andhra Pradesh. At the station, a freight train headed towards Gudur was standing on the loop line and was given priority. It had to pass through the main line, but despite the signal for the main line, the train entered the loop line. It hit the freight train from behind and the engine derailed. According to officials, the train crew had suffered a massive shock before entering the loop line. The pilot and the loco pilot are unhurt. Following this, several trains were either immediately diverted or rescheduled or cancelled. Of the trains scheduled for October 12, 18 are cancelled. The Railways has ordered a high-level probe into the accident. Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed grief and said rescue operations were underway. “The government is working swiftly in rescue and relief work. The injured are immediately rushed to the hospital. A separate team is working to arrange food and travel facilities for other passengers to return home. The fire department is engaged in removing the coaches of the derailed train. I am monitoring the rescue operations,” he said. According to officials, the restoration may take 24 hours i.e. train services on this route are expected to resume by Saturday evening.
