Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reiterated his message for world peace and called for reform of top global institutions from the high podium of the United Nations General Assembly. “Reform is the key to relevance,” he said. Speaking at the “Summit of the Future” at the UN headquarters in New York, Prime Minister Modi said, “Success of humanity does not lie in the battlefield but in our collective strength and for world peace and development, reform is necessary for global organisations”.
“On the one hand, there is a big threat to global peace and security like terrorism, on the other hand, many new areas of conflict like cyber, maritime, space are also being created. On all these subjects, I would like to emphasise that global action must match global ambition,” he said.
PM Modi’s message for peace comes after the UN General Assembly yesterday adopted the “Pact for the Future”, designed to tackle the challenges of the 21st century, including climate change, conflict and human rights.
It was adopted despite resistance by the Group of Seven countries led by Russia, which is currently engaged in an armed conflict with Ukraine.
Russia criticised the agreement, saying countries not satisfied with the deal were not given the opportunity for further negotiations.
“Unfortunately, it is nothing good that today the UN has adopted the Pact for the Future. The UN has violated its principles to please a group of delegations from the ‘beautiful garden’ who have hijacked the negotiations from the very beginning. And the majority from the ‘jungle’, like a herd, did not muster the courage to protest and defend their rights. It is they who will be responsible for the consequences,” Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Poliansky said on his X account, quoted by TASS.
