In all government schools of Himachal Pradesh, students of class 1 and class 2 can study in both Hindi and English medium from the new academic session. After detailed discussion with all the stakeholders, an important decision has been taken to amend all the orders issued earlier by the Himachal Pradesh Education Department. Under the notification issued on 12 December last year, 2023, an important decision was taken by the Himachal Pradesh Government to teach only through English medium in classes 1 and 2 from the new academic session.

In the revised notification issued on Thursday by the Himachal Pradesh Education Department to the Himachal Pradesh Elementary Education Directorate and the State Project Directorate of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, it has been said that all students will be provided the option of studying through one of the mediums, Hindi and English.
On the lines of private schools, an important decision has been taken to educate all the children of 10,300 primary schools of Himachal Pradesh in English medium. An important decision has been taken to start English medium only in class one and class two from the academic session 2024-25. Two more classes will be included in English medium from the academic session 2025-26. An important decision of not starting English medium simultaneously in all primary schools has also been taken by Himachal Pradesh Education Department.
Notification for making all preparations has been issued by Himachal Pradesh Education Department to Himachal Pradesh Elementary Education Department and State Project Directorate of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. It has also been asked to introduce English medium and organize workshops for teachers in between the sessions, so that teachers will not face any kind of problem in teaching. Presently the first class includes only three books of Hindi, English and Mathematics subjects. However, there are two books on English subject. There will be no change in Hindi and English in any way. Mathematics subject is going to be taught through English medium only. Apart from this, an important decision of giving separate training to teachers for English medium has also been taken by Himachal Pradesh Education Department.
During the assembly elections, Himachal Pradesh Congress Party had given a guarantee to the entire people of Himachal Pradesh in its election manifesto that four English medium schools would be opened in each assembly constituency of Himachal Pradesh. Now the ruling Congress Party government of Himachal Pradesh is going to convert all the primary schools of Himachal Pradesh into English medium.
