Shimla, August 4: The problem of silt blockage in the Pandoh dam has been successfully resolved, with all five gates now operational. This is a turning point in the management of the dam, resuming power generation after the blockage had been halted for some time.

The dam faced a serious problem when two of its gates got jammed due to heavy siltation. The problem prompted the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to respond immediately. The chairman along with the technical team reached the dam to monitor the situation. By 7 pm yesterday, gate no. 2 was successfully opened, starting the process of draining out the accumulated water.

The reopening of gate number 2 helped in removing the silt near gate number 1, which was later opened around 10 pm. Now all the five gates are fully functional, releasing water in controlled quantities to manage the flow efficiently. BBMB Chief Engineer Sunil Dutt Sharma confirmed that the gates are operational and assured people that there is no need to worry. The effort to open the gates was challenging, but the combined work of BBMB personnel and advanced machinery has resolved the issue.

After the gates are operational, BBMB’s immediate focus is on resuming power generation. A considerable amount of debris, including wood and other materials, had accumulated in the dam, blocking the water supply to the Baggi tunnel. This blockage had resulted in a halt in power generation at the Dahar Power House. The cleaning process has begun, and efforts are underway to restore water supply to the Baggi tunnel, clearing the way for resumption of power generation.

The resolution of the silt blockage not only restores normal water flow but also ensures the continued operation of the Dahar Power House. As the cleaning and restoration work progresses, the dam’s management hopes to smoothly transition back to regular power generation. This solution brings relief to the local community and stakeholders dependent on the dam’s power generation, ensuring a stable energy supply in the region.
