Shimla’s AQI Soars from 31 to 92 Despite Limited Two-Hour Permission for Burning Green Crackers
Last year, the State Pollution Control Board recorded Shimla’s AQI at 78, while Una district had the highest AQI in the state at 153, and Dharamshala registered an AQI of 140.
This year, despite the district administration granting permission to burn green crackers for two hours during the two-day Diwali celebration, there has been no improvement in Shimla’s Air Quality Index (AQI). Prior to the official report from the State Pollution Control Board, Shimla’s AQI was recorded at 92, and it is expected to rise further in the official report. In contrast, the AQI was only 31 on Friday.
Baddi’s AQI Exceeds 296
In the industrial area of Baddi, located in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district, the highest Air Quality Index (AQI) in the state was recorded at over 296 on Friday, prior to the official report from the State Pollution Control Board, which is typically released after 24 hours. This deterioration in air quality has contributed to a drop in temperatures in Shimla and the surrounding Solan district, raising concerns that asthma patients may face significant difficulties in the near future.
Key Factors Contributing to Air Pollution in Shimla
The unchecked supply of air-polluting firecrackers from Punjab and Haryana significantly contributes to the deterioration of Shimla’s air quality, exacerbating pollution levels and posing health risks to residents.
The negligence of officials at the State Pollution Control Board undermines efforts to monitor and control air quality, allowing pollution levels to rise unchecked and negatively impacting public health in Shimla and surrounding areas.
The non-compliance with guidelines issued by the administration significantly hampers efforts to regulate air quality. This disregard for established protocols allows pollution to escalate, further endangering the health and well-being of Shimla’s residents.
The continuous 24-hour use of fireworks has contributed to a marked decline in the use of eco-friendly green crackers. This shift not only exacerbates air pollution but also undermines efforts to promote environmentally responsible celebrations during festive periods.
The lack of clear and effective guidelines issued by the government has hindered efforts to manage air quality effectively. Without proper regulations, it becomes challenging to enforce compliance and reduce pollution, putting public health at risk.
