Shimla: Pine forests and farmers’ grasslands burnt due to massive fire in Khadkidhar and Jhandi forests.
Reported & Written By Kumud Sharma, Diary Times, Shimla, May 16Due to the massive fire that broke out in Khadkidhar as well as Jhandi area of Karoli Beat under Junga sub-division of Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh for the last two days, pine forests and farmers’ grasslands have been completely burnt.Every year many rules are made by the Forest Department to prevent major forest fires, but every year in the scorching heat, mischievous people cause losses worth crores of rupees by setting forest fires.

Forest Range Officer Koti Rupendra Sharma said that due to the massive fire set in Jhandi Beat, seventy hectares of forest wealth has been burnt to ashes. Due to which there has been a loss of Rs 12 lakh. Rupendra Sharma said that due to the massive fire set in Jhandi Beat, there was a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh due to the burning of forty pine trees, three cowsheds and a drinking water scheme. He said that the huge fire has been extinguished with the help of forest department employees and villagers.
Rupendra Sharma said that farmers set fire to grow new grass in the coming rainy season and to clear pine leaves in the forest. Also, smokers throw burning beedis and cigarettes in the forests and run away, due to which the forest wealth worth crores of rupees is being burnt to ashes in one go.
Also, due to the massive fire in Khadkidhar, Dhalayana, Kyana, Kot, Koon, Dochi panchayats under sub-division Junga, farmers’ grasslands have been burnt to ashes and the forestry department has also suffered losses.
Forest Guard Junga Beat Rohit Sharma said that Himachal Government’s forest wealth has suffered loss of one hectare of land due to the massive fire.
Rohit said that the massive fire was brought under control with the help of Forest Department employees, 1st Police Battalion Junga and villagers. Fire brigade has been returned from Shimla.
Social worker Durga Singh Thakur said that every summer, the forest department and farmers have to suffer huge losses due to fire in the forests of Khadki Dhar area of Junga, but the Himachal government does not make any arrangements.
Durga Singh Thakur has informed the Himachal government that free fodder should be provided to all the farmers of Junga whose grasslands have been forged, otherwise the farmers will face difficulties in providing fodder to the animals due to the non-availability of grasslands.
