The daily waste generated from homes in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, is now generating more electricity than before.

To increase the capacity of the waste to power plant in Bharyal of Shimla city, a biomethanation plant is being established here. This proposal of Municipal Corporation Shimla has been given in-principle approval from the Himachal Government. A total of Rs 12 crore is going to be spent on the biomethination plant.

This kind of experiment is being done for the first time in India where the capacity to generate electricity from waste is going to be increased by producing methane gas in the biomethination plant.

Municipal Corporation Mayor Surendra Chauhan had also announced the setting up of a biomethination plant in his budget presented on February 15.

Now in-principle approval for the biomethination plant has been received from the Himachal Government.

According to Shimla Municipal Corporation officials, 80 to 90 metric tons of garbage is generated daily from Shimla city, which is sent to Bharyal garbage plant. M/s Elephant Energy Private Limited Company has set up a garbage plant in Bharyal in which electricity is generated from garbage. However, at present its production is negligible. Due to non-generation of electricity, the plant’s waste i.e. RDF has to be given to the cement companies.

This is how electricity generation capacity will increase in Shimla city –

According to Shimla Municipal Corporation officials, the reason for non-generation of electricity in the plant is non-separation of wet and dry waste and less methane gas production due to lack of plastic. Now a biomethination plant will be set up in which methane gas is going to be produced first from the wet waste. Methane gas is going to be blended into syn gas and used in the garbage plant. This is going to increase the plant’s capacity to generate electricity from waste. Municipal Corporation Shimla claims that with the installation of the plant, up to 2.5 MW electricity will now be generated. Apart from Shimla city, garbage is also taken to Bharayal from all the adjoining panchayats, Ghanahatti, Kufri, Shoghi areas.
