Shimla, July 12: Now Langar will be served to the devotees in green plates from Sunday, July 14 at the historic Taradevi temple located in Shimla district.

Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, while giving information, said that in order to preserve our culture and heritage, langar will be served in plates prepared from Taur leaves in temples for a balanced environment. He said that Saksham Cluster Level Federation working in Sunni Block under the National Rural Livelihood Mission under Shimla District Rural Development Authority has been given the responsibility of making these plates. They have been given an order to make five thousand plates in the first phase.

Deputy Commissioner of Shimla District Administration, Anupam Kashyap said that the Shimla district administration is making all efforts to promote employment opportunities to self-help groups towards strengthening the rural economy.

Anupam Kashyap said that more than 2900 women work in making leaf plates in Saksham Cluster Level Federation, but due to low demand of leaves, they did not produce much. In this direction, now the Shimla district administration has decided that langar will be served in green leaves in all the temples of Shimla district. In such a situation, in the first phase, it is being started from the historic Tara Devi temple located in Shimla district.

Representatives of Saksham Cluster Level Federation gave information about the production of leaf plates to Shimla District Administration Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap and also presented leaf plates made by themselves.

Saksham Cluster Level Federation said that there are very few Taur trees in the said area. On this subject, Shimla District Administration Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap said that with the cooperation of the Forest Department, Taur plants will also be planted in the upcoming plantation campaign so that there is no shortage of Taur leaves in future.

In the culture of Himachal Pradesh, the importance of green leaf plate used for serving delicious food during Dham in lower Himachal Pradesh is paramount.

This tradition is still continuing in many areas of Devbhoomi Himachal Pradesh, which has religious and cultural history. This leaf plate made of Taur promotes social harmony as well as environmental protection. This mountain leaf plate is made from the leaves of a vine called Taur. This vine is found only in the medium altitude districts of Shimla, Mandi, Kangra and Hamirpur.

Taur vine belongs to the Kachnar family and many elements related to medicinal properties are also found in it. It also helps in increasing appetite. Taur leaves which are soft from one side can also be used as napkins. Taur leaves are soothing and sticky. This is the reason why one enjoys eating food on leaves made from them. Like leaves of other trees, Taur leaves also rot within two to three days after being put in a pit. People also use it as fertilizer in the fields.

Employment will be generated by plates made from taur leaves –

Green plates will prove to be very helpful in saving the environment. Not only this, it will also provide employment opportunities to the poor. The purpose of promoting Saksham Cluster Level Federation is to inspire other self-help groups towards this. The Himachal Pradesh government has banned the use of plates, glasses and spoons made of plastic in Himachal Pradesh.
