Shimla, July 03: The Shimla district administration has started an exercise to free Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla from beggars. Under this, beggars will be rehabilitated with the help of Himachal Pradesh Skill Development Corporation. Apart from this, a provision has also been made to train beggars for self-employment. Employment will be provided to beggars under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by the Shimla district administration.

Shimla District Magistrate Anupam Kashyap said that beggars will be rehabilitated under the Smile scheme in Shimla city, which has been selected to make India beggar-free. There is a provision in the Smile scheme to rehabilitate minor children who beg and get them enrolled in the nearest school.

He said that during this period, all the expenses of the said minor will be borne by the Education Department. Adult beggars will be shifted to de-addiction centres (only those who are addicted to drugs) and Garima Griha. Here, adult beggars will get facilities of accommodation, food, clothes, entertainment, other daily activities and will also be counselled. The Municipal Corporation has selected two Garima Grihas in Lakkar Bazar and Chaura Maidan under the Smile scheme.

27 beggars identified in the survey-

Shimla District Magistrate Anupam Kashyap said that 27 beggars have been identified in the capital Shimla. This includes 26 adults and one minor. Under the Smile scheme, the District Welfare Officer has been appointed as the nodal officer. A survey of beggars in Shimla city has been conducted under the leadership of the Commissioner Municipal Corporation Shimla. This includes collecting information about the beggars’ sitting place, identity, since when they have been begging, etc.

17 lakh 60 thousand rupees will be spent under Smile scheme-

Anupam Kashyap said that 17 lakh 60 thousand rupees will be spent by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on the rehabilitation of beggars in Shimla city under the Smile scheme. This amount has been transferred to the Municipal Corporation Shimla.
