Shimla, September 10: The issue of illegal construction in Shimla’s suburb Sanjauli was once again raised in the Himachal Assembly on Tuesday. Shimla city MLA Harish Janartha raised the issue under Point of Order and demanded the Chief Minister’s intervention. He said that the issue is taking a communal turn, which has created a danger of law and order deteriorating. He said that a tense situation has arisen in Sanjauli. In view of this, he demands that a street vendors policy should be made and verification of any person coming from outside the state should be done.

In response to this, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that the government will make a policy to deal with the problem of haphazard extortion. A committee of the Assembly or a sub-committee of the Cabinet will be formed to make a street vendors policy. Apart from officials, MLAs from both the ruling and opposition parties will be included in this committee.

The Chief Minister said that in the new street vendor policy, licenses will be issued to the street vendors only after checking their background. He said that Himachal has a history of peaceful coexistence and we respect every section of the society. He said that the law will do its work in the mosque case and if something illegal has happened then action will be taken as per the rules.

Chief Minister Sukhu said that everyone will be given space in the form of a policy for street vendors and according to the rules. He said that a cabinet sub-committee or assembly committee will be formed to consider this issue, as it is the responsibility of both the ruling party and the opposition to ensure communal harmony in the state. He said that everyone in the country has the right to work anywhere and Himachal is a peaceful state, where everyone lives in complete communal harmony and respects all religions and faiths.

Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Pathania said that any kind of dharna or protest should be dealt with strictly, so that law and order problems do not arise. Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh said that any citizen of India can come to Himachal and earn his livelihood, but the issue has gone beyond this and some people want to give it a communal colour, while some want to take political advantage of it.

He said that a new vendors policy should be made for Himachalis. Also, any person coming from outside Himachal Pradesh should be given license only after verification. Anirudh Singh demanded action against those anti-social elements who are posting such messages on social media that can endanger the communal harmony of the city. He said that this can lead to a big law and order problem.

Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur said that the process of verification and registration of outsiders was started during the tenure of BJP. He said that every citizen of the country can come to Himachal, but the way the number of people whose history is not verified is increasing in the state is worrying. The Leader of Opposition said that the Sanjauli Masjid case should be settled soon and dates should not be given like before.
