Russia has accused American mobile phone maker Apple of hacking thousands of iPhones. At the same time, Apple has rejected Russia’s claim outright. Russia’s Federal Security Service claimed on Monday, without providing evidence, that several thousand iPhones have been hacked in the country in a recently exposed spying operation, The Washington Post reported. Russian cyber security firm Kaspersky Lab claimed that Apple installed file-stealing malware on the iPhone, which is an older version of Apple’s mobile operating system. The firm said there was a lack of sufficient evidence to attribute the breaches to any particular government or organisation.

According to The Washington Post, an Apple spokesperson denied the allegations, saying, “We have never and will never work with any government to insert backdoors into any Apple product.” A Kremlin spokesman said the government believes iPhones are inherently insecure. According to the Washington Post, the FSB said that the hacked diplomats were from other countries as well.
