Shimla, August 24: The Shimla Municipal Corporation is taking a significant step to tackle the city’s monsoon flooding problems by reopening and restoring the British-era drainage system. The project is part of a ₹78 crore scheme aimed at reducing waterlogging and preventing damage caused by heavy rains.

Shimla has long been grappling with monsoon-related flooding, and the city’s outdated drainage system has been a major reason for it. Over the years, rapid urban development has led to the clogging of many old drains, as multi-storey buildings and large projects have been built on them. This has resulted in severe waterlogging and property damage during the rainy season.

To address these issues, the Municipal Corporation has sought detailed records of the hundred-year-old British-era drains from the Revenue Department. These records will help the corporation inspect the drains, identify blockages and determine where new drainage solutions are needed. The goal is to restore these old drains to their original function and reduce the hazards caused by heavy rains.

Emphasizing the importance of the project, Mayor Surender Chauhan said, “Development in Shimla over the years has affected our drainage system, leaving us vulnerable during monsoons. By reopening and repairing these British-era drains, we can better protect the city from damage caused by rainwater.”

The plan also includes developing new drainage systems in areas where the old drains are no longer effective. The budget of Rs 78 crore, which has been sent to the state government for approval, will cover the cost of these repairs and new construction. Work is expected to begin as soon as funds are available.

Shimla’s monsoon flooding problem is well known. In 2023, the city was hit by severe floods, causing extensive damage. An inadequate drainage system was a major factor in the disaster, highlighting the need for urgent action. Experts have pointed out that Shimla’s hilly terrain and dense urban layout make it particularly prone to flooding. Restoring the British-era drains is seen as a necessary step to address these challenges.

Residents have welcomed the move, and expressed hope that the revived drainage system will reduce the city’s flooding problems. However, some have raised concerns about potential challenges in implementing the plan, especially in areas where buildings have been constructed on old drains.

The municipal corporation’s initiative reflects a wider recognition of the need to balance urban development with sustainable infrastructure solutions. As Shimla continues to grow, it will be important to ensure that its drainage system can cope with the pressures of modern life and unpredictable weather patterns.

With the monsoon season still underway, there is an urgent need to address Shimla’s drainage problems. The success of this project can serve as an example for other hill towns facing similar problems, showing how a mix of restoring old infrastructure and creating new solutions can help protect against monsoon damages in the future.
