what is the whole matter
On March 23, the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma in Surat convicted Rahul Gandhi, 52, and sentenced him to two years in prison in a criminal defamation case filed against him over his “Modi surname” remark in 2019.

The very next day after the sentence was pronounced, the former Congress President was disqualified from the Lok Sabha. Following his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi will not be able to contest elections for eight years, unless a High Court stays his conviction.

The matter pertains to Rahul’s alleged statement that “how come all thieves have the surname Modi?” Gandhi made the remark while addressing a rally in Kolar, Karnataka on April 13, 2019, during the Lok Sabha election campaign. On this statement of Rahul, BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had filed a complaint.
