Mumbai: A Mumbai court has granted bail to advertising firm director Bhavesh Bhide, the prime accused in the case of hoarding collapse in Ghatkopar area in May this year that killed 17 people.

Additional Sessions Judge V M Pathade on Saturday granted Bhide’s bail plea.

Bhinde, through his advocate Sana Khan, had argued that the unfortunate incident was an “act of God” and he was framed for “political vendetta”.

The hoarding, put up in the Ghatkopar area, fell due to “unexpected, abnormal wind speed” and the applicant (whose firm had put it up) cannot be held responsible for it, advocate Khan argued.

It was also said that Bhide was not the director of the firm when the huge hoarding was put up.

Bhinde has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The prosecution opposed Bhide’s bail, saying there was sufficient evidence to show his active involvement in the case.

Seventeen people, including the former general manager of Mumbai airport’s air traffic control and his wife, were killed on May 13 when a billboard fell on a petrol pump during sudden dust storms and unseasonal rains.

It was alleged that the hoarding was put up illegally on railway land.
