Shimla – In a significant move, the Himachal Pradesh government has decided that teachers’ annual salary increment will now be based on their students’ performance in board and non-board exams. Teachers with better results will be eligible for a pay hike, while teachers with consistently poor results may face a financial penalty.

According to the education department, teachers who bring in zero or less than 25-30% success rate in exams will not get a pay hike. If the poor performance continues, teachers may have to be deprived of a pay hike altogether. The department has already prepared a proposal outlining this approach, which has been sent to the government for approval.

The department has stopped the pay hike of 20 to 25 teachers this year due to poor results in board exams. The scale for the pay hike will now be directly linked to exam success, with full pay hike given to teachers achieving a 100% pass rate. Teachers whose students achieve success between 90% and 50% will get a proportionate pay hike.

Additionally, the education department will evaluate the performance of teachers after each exam cycle. For students from classes 1 to 8, results of summative assessment (SA) and formative assessment (FA) will be used to evaluate teachers. Similarly, results of board and non-board exams for classes 9 to 12 will also be evaluated, with detailed reports being generated to monitor performance.

The government aims to improve standards of education and ensure greater accountability with this new system. Teachers are expected to focus more on delivering quality education and enhancing student outcomes across the state.
