Shimla, August 17: Health services in Himachal Pradesh will be severely affected as doctors from both government and private hospitals have announced a 24-hour strike that will begin at 6 am on Saturday, August 17, and end at 6 am on Sunday, August 18. The strike is in reaction to the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at a medical college in West Bengal, which has sparked outrage in the medical community across the country.

During the strike, OPDs will remain closed in hospitals across the state as doctors protest this heinous crime and demand speedy justice for the victim. However, emergency services will continue to run as usual to ensure that critical care is available to those in need. Doctors will be called only for serious medical emergencies during this period.

Dr. Rajesh Rana, president of the State Medical Officers Association, stressed the importance of the protest, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident in West Bengal. Our strike is a step against such violence and we demand that the authorities take immediate and strict action against those responsible. Though we are shutting down OPD services, emergency care will not be compromised.”

The protests gained momentum on Friday evening when the Resident Doctors Association of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla took out a candlelight march. Despite heavy rains, hundreds of doctors took part in the march, which started from Sher-e-Punjab and ended at the DC office. The march was a powerful example of solidarity with the victim and demand for justice.

Doctors across Himachal Pradesh are united in demanding a safe working environment and immediate prosecution of those responsible for the crime in West Bengal. The 24-hour strike is a reminder of the challenges faced by medical professionals and the urgent need for measures to protect health workers from violence and abuse.
