North Korea has confirmed that it will launch a military satellite in June. State media quoted a senior defense official as saying that the purpose of the launch of this military satellite is to monitor the military programs of the United States and its allies.

At the same time, North Korea informed Japan that it would launch a rocket between May 31 and June 11. Japan said on Monday that North Korea had told it that a satellite launch could happen earlier this week, but Japan warned that North Korea is in fact planning a ballistic missile test.

The Korean Central News Agency cited Ri Pyong Chol, vice chairman of the ruling party’s Central Military Commission, as saying the military satellite would be launched in June. The North Korean spy satellites are capable of tracking, monitoring and real-time detection of US and its military forces, the statement said.
