New Delhi – Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has categorically denied any claims of imposition of ‘toilet tax’ in Himachal Pradesh and termed these allegations as baseless and politically motivated. Addressing the media in New Delhi, CM Sukhu stressed that such claims are merely a weapon for the opposition, especially the BJP, to gain political mileage as the Haryana Assembly elections approach.

“There is no ‘toilet tax’ in Himachal Pradesh,” CM Sukhu said. “The BJP is either playing the religion card or raising such fabricated issues. It is irresponsible to politicise baseless allegations, especially when they are far from reality.”

BJP’s strategy under scrutiny

Sukhu pointed out that ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP government had launched free schemes worth Rs 5,000 crore, including provision of free water. Despite these sweeping measures, voters supported the Congress party, resulting in the formation of the current government.

The chief minister highlighted the folly of the BJP’s strategy, saying that the provision of free water also extends to five-star hotels. He criticised the opposition for attempting to create controversy over issues created for electoral gain.

Rationalising water subsidy

In view of the financial implications of such free schemes, Sukhu clarified that the Congress government has rationalised water subsidy. The state has now implemented a minimum charge of Rs 100 per month per connection for rural residents. CM Sukhu defended the decision, saying that families who are able to pay their water bills should contribute to the financial health of the state.

“Our government is committed to fair and balanced policies,” he said. “Families who are able to pay for their water services are doing so without any problem, which reflects a responsible approach to governance.”

Call for constructive politics
The alleged “toilet tax” has been a controversial topic in political discussions, with opposition parties leveraging this claim to criticise the Congress-led government. However, CM Sukhu’s strong rebuttal aims to clarify the situation and turn the dialogue towards constructive governance.

He advised political leaders to refrain from using fabricated claims to mislead the public and focus on real issues affecting the lives of the citizens of Himachal Pradesh. In this charged political climate, Sukhu’s remarks are a reminder of the importance of honesty in political dialogue, especially ahead of crucial elections.
