With an aim to enhance food safety and accountability, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced that all restaurants, fast food outlets and street vendors will be required to show the owner’s ID card. The decision comes after similar measures implemented in Uttar Pradesh and was shared by Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh through a recent Facebook post.

The order regarding the requirement to show the owner’s ID card was issued in a recent meeting of the Urban Development and Municipal Corporation on Tuesday evening, Vikramaditya Singh said. The initiative stems from growing concerns over food safety, especially in the wake of alarming incidents of food adulteration in various areas. Minister Singh cited a recent directive from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who stressed the need for strict action against food adulteration practices, especially those involving human waste and other harmful substances.

Following reports of a worrying trend of food adulteration, with instances of contamination of non-edible substances in items such as juices, dal and roti, it was found necessary to conduct intensive inspections of hotels, dhabas and restaurants across the state to ensure public health safety. He urged for amendments in the existing rules to strengthen enforcement and accountability in the food service industry.

With this new directive, Himachal Pradesh aims to strengthen consumer confidence and safety in its food industry, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can enjoy food without fear of contamination.
