New Delhi, September 18: A historic decision was taken in the Modi Government’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday, where the proposal of ‘One Nation, One Election’ was approved. In the meeting, there was an in-depth discussion on the report of the high-level committee constituted under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind. In this report, it has been recommended to hold simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and State Assembly Elections. It has also been suggested to conduct local body elections simultaneously within 100 days.
After the cabinet approved this proposal, many opposition parties including Congress have opposed it. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called it impractical and said that it is an attempt to divert attention.
Suggestion to extend the term of states till 2029
The Ramnath Kovind Committee submitted its report to President Draupadi Murmu on March 14, 2024, in which it was suggested that the term of the Legislative Assemblies of all the states should be extended till 2029, so that their elections can be held simultaneously with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
This move can prove to be a major change for Indian democracy, which is an important step towards simplifying the election process and avoiding frequent elections. However, constitutional and political challenges may have to be faced to implement it.
