MG has published pictures of the ZS EV ahead of its launch. The electric SUV will replace the MG ZS EV, which will go public in the UK next year. It is called the MG ES5 in China and its main rivals are the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia EV3 and Skoda Elroc. According to sources, the EV will not be offered as the ‘ZS EV’. Still, it will share design similarities with MG’s existing EV portfolio, especially the MG4 hatchback.
The MG ES5 has a less aggressive design compared to its predecessor. In the pictures, thin headlamps, black plastic side cladding, large chrome MG octagon badge, full-width light bar with Y-shaped tail lights and roof rails can be seen. The centre touchscreen is the focal point of the minimalist interior design. The cabin design of the UK version may be different and may share similarities with recent MG models.
Size and platform
Compared to its current model, the ZS replacement will be lower, wider and longer.
It is significantly longer than the Hyundai Kona Electric, measuring 4,476 mm x approximately 120 mm. Its wheelbase is additionally 2,730 mm which offers more interior space. It is built using MG’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP). Multiple battery and motor configurations are also supported.
Range
The MG ES5 will likely share the same powertrain options with the MG4. It will feature rear-wheel drive, and the electric motor is expected to generate between 168 and 242 horsepower. Given that this chassis supports twin motor installations, an AWD version may be possible in the future.
Pricing
MG UK is aiming to launch the ES5 at a starting price of less than £30,000, which is a significantly lower price than other automobile companies. This competitive pricing strategy could give MG a significant boost.
Apart from the ES5, MG is also working on EVs to compete with the likes of the Enyaq and Renault Scenic.
Future plans for India launch
The automaker has also announced that in the coming years, it will introduce new energy cars due to the demand for the ZS EV.
Thus, it is reasonable to speculate that the new ZS EV (ES5) will come to India. Interestingly, MG may also introduce ICE and hybrid versions of this car. Despite slow sales, MG may improve its look. As part of its intended NEV line up for the Indian market, it will also introduce a hybrid Astor. The ES5 is likely to have a clear impact on both these cars.
