Mandi: Kusum Thakur Recovered From Lung Disease and Won Gold in Khelo India University Games

Mandi, February 29: Kusum Thakur, an athlete from Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, has proved her talent in the fourth edition of “Khelo India University Games” 2023. Kusum Thakur has won two medals in the competition. Kusum has won gold medal in 200 meter race and silver medal in 100 meter race. Kusum has not only brought glory to the Mandi district but has also brought glory to Himachal Pradesh University Shimla (HPU Shimla) in the country. The competition was held in Guwahati, Assam. About 4500 runners from 200 universities participated in it.

In Khelo India University Games 2023, Himachal won only two gold medals, one of which was won by Kusum Thakur.

Kusum had qualified for the “Khelo India University Games” by winning the gold medal in the All India University Games in December 2023.

Kusum Thakur of Himachal Pradesh University won the gold medal by completing the 200 meter race in 24.74 seconds. To break the national record, Kusum will have to improve by about two seconds. The special thing is that Kusum Thakur has won the silver medal by completing the 100 meter race in 12.22 seconds, Shivaji Ji University runner Sudeshna has won the gold medal by completing the race in 12.01 seconds, That means Kusum lagged behind by 22nd part of a second.

Kusum took revenge of Sudeshna for 100 meter race in 200 meter race. Let us tell you that Sudeshna got second place in 200 meters. Priya Thakur won the bronze medal by completing the 400 meter race in 55.58 seconds, while Manisha Kumari of Himachal, who completed the race in 55.66 seconds, stood fourth.

The success of the college student is also extraordinary because about two and a half years ago, at the age of 19, both the lungs of Kusum were filled with water, the doctors had even said that she would not be able to even step on the field. By making the impossible possible, Kusum Thakur has written such a story, which is a lesson for those who have given up on life.

Due to courage and confidence, Kusum Thakur has also achieved the distinction of becoming the first sprinter of the hill state “Himachal”.

21-year-old Kusum Thakur of Baila Panchayat of Pandoh in Mandi district has also implemented in real life the proverb in which it is said that wings do not help, courage should have life.

Kusum Thakur, a second year B.A. student at Vallabh College of Mandi, said, she started running with her brother Harish in the fourth class. At the age of 19, life turned dark during Covid when both lungs were filled with water. Doctors asked to stop running immediately. Didn’t go on track for two years. When I stepped on the track in December 2022, my feet were trembling, there was a fear in my mind, but my courage remained intact.

Kusum said that she practices for 6 to 7 hours daily. Along with Mandi, she also practices in Dharamshala. However, the state government should take concrete steps to encourage the “daughter” who has written extraordinary success stories.
