Legal battle: Himachal fights for rights to Shanan hydropower project

Shimla, 01 August: Himachal Pradesh has determined to reclaim its rights over the 110 MW Shanan hydropower project located in Jogindernagar in Mandi district in a high-stakes legal battle. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, in a meeting with senior state government officials, stressed that it is important to present a strong case before the Supreme Court to ensure that the benefits of the project reach the people of Himachal Pradesh.

“The present state government will fight vigorously to get back the rights of Himachal Pradesh so that the people of the state can benefit from the project,” CM Sukhu declared. Providing historical context, he said the Shanan hydropower project, built during the British era, was leased to the Punjab government in 1925 for 99 years. The lease agreement was signed between Raja Joginder Bahadur, the then ruler of Mandi, and the Chief Engineer of Punjab. The lease period officially expired on March 2, 2024.

Emphasizing on the State’s rightful claim, CM Sukhu said, “Since the project is in the territory of Himachal Pradesh, it should be handed over to the Himachal Pradesh Government without any delay.” He emphasized the State Government’s commitment to ensure that the benefits of the project reach the people of Himachal Pradesh, stressing that the administration is building a strong case for retrieving the project.

“The State Government is committed to ensure that the benefits of the project reach the people of Himachal Pradesh. Since legal proceedings are underway, the Government is building a strong case for retrieving the project,” he reiterated.

With its hundred-year-old historical roots, the Shanan Hydel Project is a vital asset for Himachal Pradesh. Retrieving it successfully promises to bring substantial benefits, which is in line with the State Government’s broader vision of self-reliance and sustainable development.
