Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi is set to leave for China on a two-day visit, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Friday. Hayashi, who is set to visit Beijing for the first time in three years since 2019, will begin his visit on April 1. Kyodo News reported that the Japanese FM’s visit comes at a time when relations between the two countries remain strained over a range of issues, including Beijing’s recent detention of a Japanese businessman and a territorial dispute.
Kyodo News quoted official sources as saying that Hayashi would meet his Chinese counterpart Qin Gang for the first time since Wang Yi’s replacement by the former Chinese ambassador to the United States in late December. According to sources, Hayashi is likely to ask China to release the Japanese man, who has been jailed since the beginning of this month on charges of espionage. Relations between the two Asian countries have been strained after an employee of Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma Ltd. was jailed.
