India deserves to be included in the list of global superpowers: Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin said India should undoubtedly added to the list of superpowers.

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that India deserves to be included in the list of global superpowers, as its economy is currently growing faster than any other country.

Addressing the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, Putin also said that Russia is developing ties with India in all directions and there is a great deal of trust in bilateral relations.

“India undoubtedly deserves to be included in the list of superpowers, as it has a population of one and a half billion, the fastest growth among all economies in the world, ancient culture and very good prospects for further development,” he said. Describing India as a great country, Putin said: “We are developing relations with India in all directions. India is a great country, now the largest in terms of population: 1.5 billion people, plus 10 million people every year.” He said India is leading the world in economic growth.

“Our vision of where and at what pace our relations will develop is based on today’s realities. The volume of our cooperation is growing by several times every year,” Russian news agency TASS quoted Putin as saying.

Putin said contacts between India and Russia are developing in the security and defence sector.

“Look at how many types of Russian military equipment are in service with the Indian armed forces. There is a lot of trust in this relationship. We don’t just sell our weapons to India; we design them jointly,” he said.

Putin gave the example of the BrahMos cruise missile project.

“In fact, we have made it [the missile] suitable for use in three environments – in the air, at sea and on land. These projects conducted for the benefit of India’s security continue,” he said. “This is widely known and nobody has a problem with it, but these projects demonstrate a high level of mutual trust and cooperation. So this is what we will continue to do in the near future, and I hope we will continue to do so in the distant future.” Putin acknowledged some difficulties at the border between India and China, the agency reported. However, he said that intelligent and capable people who have the future of their nations in mind are looking for compromises and will eventually find them. “If this approach continues to gain momentum, compromises can be found, and they will be found,” Putin said. Relations between India and China deteriorated after a fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, which marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades. On October 21, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in New Delhi that an agreement has been finalised between India and China after weeks of talks that will resolve issues that arose in 2020. The agreement finalised on patrolling and disengagement of troops along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh is a major breakthrough in ending the four-year-long standoff.
