Houston storm: 100 mph speed wreaked havoc all around, 4 dead

Four people have been reported dead due to the devastation caused by the severe storm in Houston, America’s fourth largest city, and more than 800,000 homes and businesses have been blacked out.

The Houston School District closed all public schools on Friday and plans to reopen on Monday.Also, due to worsening weather, a decision has been taken to stop all flights at two major airports of Houston city. Winds as high as 60 mph were recorded at Bush Intercontinental Airport in downtown Houston.

 

More than four people are reported dead due to the storm in Houston, Houston Mayor John Whitmire told reporters at a news briefing Thursday night, “We have a 100-mile-per-hour storm, which The storm is comparable to Ike, causing significant damage in the city of Houston.”

Mayor Whitmire reported that the area could also be hit by tornadoes and politely urged people to “stay home”.

“There are trees down on streets all across the city of Houston,” Whitmire said.

“I ask every citizen to be patient, to be considerate of their neighbors,” Whitmire said. He said it will take 24 hours, and maybe 48 hours, for power to be restored to homes and businesses.

 

Houston city fire chief Samuel Pena told reporters that at least two of the four deaths were caused by falling trees, while another was caused by “a crane blown over by the wind.”
