Himachal Pradesh Assembly By-Election 2024

Shimla, June 26: After the resignations of the three independent MLAs of Himachal Pradesh were accepted, the situation regarding the candidates for the by-election to be held on the three vacant seats of Himachal Pradesh Assembly has become absolutely clear.

After withdrawal of nominations, names of 13 candidates are left in the fray in the three assembly seats of Himachal Pradesh- Dehra, Nalagarh and Hamirpur.

On Wednesday, two candidates withdrew their nominations. A spokesperson of the Election Department said that no candidate withdrew his nomination for the by-election to be held in Dehra assembly constituency and a total of five candidates will contest in Dehra assembly constituency.

After the withdrawal of the nomination of independent candidate Pradeep Kumar for the by-election to be held in Hamirpur assembly constituency, there will be a contest between three candidates.

After the withdrawal of the nomination of independent candidate Gurnam Singh for the by-election to be held in Nalagarh assembly constituency, now there will be a contest between five candidates.

In the by-elections to be held on three assembly seats of Himachal Pradesh, the main contest will be between BJP and Congress candidates. BJP has fielded former independent MLAs on all three seats. While the ruling Congress party has given a second chance to former candidates on two seats, on one seat, Congress has fielded CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur as a new face. In the by-elections to be held on three assembly seats of Himachal Pradesh, six independent candidates have also come out to try their luck. While on the Nalagarh seat, Swabhiman Party has fielded its candidate.

Dehra Assembly Constituency –

In the Dehra Assembly Constituency of Kangra district, Kamlesh (53) Indian National Congress, Hoshyar Singh (57), Bharatiya Janata Party and independent candidates Sulekha Devi (59), Arun Ankesh Syal (34) and Advocate Sanjay Sharma (56) have entered the electoral fray.

The Congress Party has not won even once in the by-elections held in the Dehra Assembly Constituency, which came into existence in the year 2012. The Congress party has made Dehra assembly constituency a hot seat by giving ticket to CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur from here.

CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur will have a direct contest with BJP candidate Hoshyar Singh. Hoshyar Singh has been an independent MLA twice. The prestige of CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur is also at stake on the Dehra assembly seat. CM Sukhu’s in-laws’ place comes in the sub-division of Dehra assembly constituency.

Hamirpur Assembly Constituency –

There will be a contest between Ashish Sharma (37) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dr. Pushpinder Verma (48) Indian National Congress and independent candidate Nand Lal Sharma (64) from Hamirpur assembly constituency. Since the seat is from CM Sukhu’s home district Hamirpur, CM Sukhu’s prestige is at stake here too.

The Congress party has been losing the Hamirpur assembly seat for the last 21 consecutive years. Former CM Prem Kumar Dhumal and MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur also have considerable influence in Hamirpur assembly constituency.

Nalagarh Assembly Constituency –

There will be a tough contest between Hardeep Singh Bawa (44) Indian National Congress, KL Thakur (64) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kishori Lal Sharma (46) Swabhiman Party and independent candidates Harpreet Singh (36) and Vijay Singh (36) from Nalagarh assembly constituency.

Congress party last won the Nalagarh assembly seat in the 2011 by-election. In 2012, KL Thakur of BJP won from Nalagarh assembly constituency. In 2017, the Nalagarh assembly seat again went to the Congress. In 2022, an independent candidate waved the flag of victory on the Nalagarh assembly seat. This time BJP has bet on an independent candidate in the by-election.
