Chamba, November 11: Himachal’s Padma Shri awardee and famous traditional musical instrument ‘Paun Mata’ artist Musafir Ram Bhardwaj, who blessed people by saying ‘Shiv tera bhala karala’, died at the age of 105. Padma Shri Musafir Ram Bhardwaj, a resident of Bharmour in Chamba district, breathed his last on Friday night at his residence in his native village Patraluan in Dunera, Pathankot. His death has sent a wave of grief among music lovers. He was known for his simplicity and patience.

According to family information, Musafir Ram was unwell for some time. After his death, his last rites were performed in Patralua on Saturday with full state honours. Born in 1930 in Sunchai village of Bharmour, Musafir Ram learned to play Paun Mata at the age of just 13, which is a unique musical instrument made of copper frame and sheep skin. On the basis of this art, he made his name famous in the country and abroad.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014 and also performed at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. Musafir Ram worked in the fields with his father to support his family. His family is in deep mourning today. He is survived by his wife Shuko Devi, four sons- Mahesh Kumar, Chaman Lal, Roshan Lal, Vinod Kumar, and a daughter Dhauni Devi.

Deputy Commissioner of Chamba Mukesh Repaswal, ADM Bharmour Kulveer Singh Rana, Bharmour MLA Dr. Janak Raj and many other dignitaries expressed deep condolences on his demise.
