Hydrogen train is going to run soon on the world heritage Kalka-Shimla railway line. This hydrogen train is going to be the first train in the country to run on narrow gauge.

Northern Railway Board has started trials for operating hydrogen trains on the Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge line. The Central Government has included hydrogen train on the heritage infrastructure of Northern Railway in the budget of 2024-25.

Hydrogen fueling stations are to be set up at Kalka, Shimla and Barog stations to run hydrogen trains on the Kalka-Shimla railway section. Plants to extract hydrogen from water and convert it into fuel are going to be installed at these three stations. For this, survey of Kalka-Shimla railway section has also been done. At present, trains are running only on diesel engines on this railway section.

Hydrogen is considered a pollution-free clean fuel. The use of hydrogen fuel results in zero emissions of harmful gases and releases only water vapor, which is considered clean and environment-friendly in the green cover. Railways aims to convert diesel-powered locomotives into hydrogen engines to provide green fuel-based trains.

There are plans to introduce hydrogen-powered trains in the form of train sets like the Vande Bharat Express trains.
