By-election results increased CM Sukhu's stature
Shimla, July 13: In the 18-month tenure of Himachal Pradesh’s honourable Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Congress has defeated BJP in the second consecutive by-election. A month ago, Congress had strengthened its government by winning four out of six seats. Now in the second by-election also, Congress has defeated BJP. Despite the strong siege of BJP, Chief Minister Sukhu succeeded in getting his wife Kamlesh elected to the Assembly for the first time. This will be the first time that a husband-wife duo will be seen in Himachal Assembly. In the by-election held under Sukhu’s leadership, Congress has also made a comeback in Nalagarh. However, CM Sukhu could not get Congress victory in his home district Hamirpur. Congress has been losing continuously in Hamirpur for 21 years.

The results of the by-elections have further increased the stature of CM Sukhu. There was rebellion in the Congress when the CM’s wife got the ticket from Dehra. Former Congress candidate Rajesh Sharma had opened a front against the CM. But the CM was successful in persuading him and now the Dehra seat of Kangra has easily come in the Congress’s kitty. In the by-elections, Himachal Congress was not dependent on its national leadership.
Among the star campaigners of the by-election, CM Sukhu was the only one who had the entire responsibility. Congress national leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge and other big leaders did not come for the election campaign. Although all Sukhu’s ministers and other Congress leaders were active in the campaign, the campaign for Dehra and Hamirpur was the responsibility of CM Sukhu. With the victory in the by-election for the second time, Sukhu has once again become a threat in front of the Congress high command. Also, his government has become stronger than before.
The victory in Dehra by-election can bring something new in the political atmosphere of Kangra in the coming times. Chief Minister Sukhu has now become the leader of Kangra along with Hamirpur. During the election campaign, he kept capitalizing on the fact that his in-laws live in Kangra district. Kangra district has an important contribution in the politics of the state. One ministerial post is still vacant in Sukhu cabinet. There are only two ministers from Kangra district right now. It is believed that after the victory in Dehra, Kangra district may get the gift of a ministerial post.
