Shimla, July 25: The effect of drought is increasing in Himachal Pradesh due to lack of proper rainfall during the monsoon season. During the entire month of July, an average of 300 mm of rainfall was recorded in the state, but currently less than 200 mm of rainfall has been recorded.

The impact of the drought has worsened the situation in all districts of the state, with rivers and streams drying up and water levels in stepwells declining. This situation has raised concerns about the availability of drinking water, with the Jal Shakti Department expressing concern over dwindling resources.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, the monsoon has weakened after a brief period of activity, resulting in insufficient rain across the state. However, forecasts suggest that the monsoon may become active again in the coming days, bringing some hope of relief.

Last month, some areas have received particularly heavy rains. Lahaul-Spiti received the least rainfall at 76 per cent, which is below normal. It was followed by Sirmour at 59 per cent, Kinnaur at 52 per cent, Una at 50 per cent and Chamba at 49 per cent. Other districts have also witnessed a significant deficit. Bilaspur recorded 33 per cent less rain than normal, Hamirpur at 40 per cent, Kangra at 15 per cent, Kullu at 36 per cent, Mandi at 23 per cent, Shimla at 25 per cent and Solan at 44 per cent.

In July alone, the state received 32 per cent less rainfall than normal, with only Kangra district receiving 6 per cent more than normal. The other 11 districts received below normal rainfall, recording only 131 mm of rain between July 1 and 24, while the normal rainfall is 192 mm.

The monsoon arrived in the state on June 27, but there has been significant rainfall only two to three times in the past month. The lack of rain has increased humidity in the plains and reduced water levels in rivers and streams. Only drizzle was reported in Hamirpur district, raising fears of crop damage due to lack of adequate water for irrigation.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in many areas from July 27 to 30, with light rain likely on Thursday and Friday.
