CM and DGP's response on NRI couple assault case
Shimla, June 17: The atmosphere is heated due to two incidents that took place in Khajjiar and Dalhousie of Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.Due to the growing uproar over both the incidents, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has had to handle the matter, and the Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police has also had to issue an official press statement regarding both the incidents to make people aware of the truth.
It is worth mentioning that on 9th and 11th June, tourists from Punjab had a minor clash with the local people due to some reason. Then the whole matter came to light when a video went viral on social media in which an NRI tourist is saying that at Chandigarh airport, CISF LCT Kulwinder Kaur had hit Mandi’s newly elected MP Kangana Ranaut on her face. After which, tourists coming from Punjab to Himachal Pradesh are taking revenge for Kangana Ranaut’s slap.
Let us tell you that taking cognizance of a Spanish-Punjabi couple being harassed by the locals in the hill station Dalhousie of Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab’s NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal had also lodged a Zero FIR in Amritsar last Sunday.
An FIR was lodged against unknown persons at Amritsar Rural Police Station, Baba Bakala, and was transferred to Sultanpur Police Station in Chamba district based on the complaint by the victim’s brother Joban Jeet Singh, who lived in England and had accompanied her to Dalhousie.
Joban Jeet had said that he reached Dalhousie on June 10 and reached Khajjiar at 2 pm. He parked his car at a parking space. The next morning at around 11 am, when he was taking his car out of the parking space, the parking contractor and staff members stopped him. He was threatened by referring to the incident of Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut being slapped by CISF LCT Kulwinder Kaur at Chandigarh airport.
In the whole matter, the image of Himachal Pradesh was being tarnished, but as far as the dignity of tourists in Himachal Pradesh is concerned, Kangana Ranaut’s slapping incident was creating suspense.
Seeing the whole matter catching fire, the Himachal Pradesh government along with CM Sukhu had to clarify the situation of the whole matter.
According to the official press release of the Himachal Pradesh government and police, facts are being presented in newspapers and social media in a distorted manner, due to which the image of the people of Himachal as well as the police is getting tarnished. The Himachal Pradesh government and police have said that Himachal Pradesh has always welcomed tourists and is a peaceful state.

Incident-2: The second incident is from the hill station Dalhousie in Chamba district. In the official press release, the Director General of Himachal Pradesh Police has said that on June 11, 2024, NRI couple Kanwaljit Singh, his Spanish wife and brother Jeevan Jeet Singh had gone to visit Khajjiar from Amritsar. Investigation revealed that Kanwaljit Singh and his brother Jeevan Jeet Singh forcibly held the hands of female tourists and local women on the pretext of palmistry, which led to an altercation on the spot. The police intervened in the matter and brought the NRI couple to Sultanpur police station, where Kanwaljit Singh and his brother Jeevan Jeet Singh refused police action. They also refused to undergo medical test.
Incident-1: The first incident is from Khajjiar, a hill station in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, known as “Mini Switzerland”. According to the Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh, on June 9, 2024, ASI Paramjit Singh of Chandigarh Police came to visit Khajjiar. He had parked his car Toyota Fortuner (CH01-CE 8821) in the middle of the road, which disrupted traffic. When the policemen of Khajjiar police post asked him to remove the vehicle, he got angry and started arguing. The matter was investigated by Police Station Sadar, District Chamba. The investigation found that the allegations leveled against the policemen were completely baseless and false.
Himachal Pradesh Government’s Reaction –
A spokesperson of the Himachal Pradesh Government said that according to media reports, a zero FIR has been lodged by the couple in Amritsar in connection with the attack on the NRI couple in Khajjiar, Dalhousie. The spokesperson said that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has strongly condemned the incident and directed the Himachal Pradesh Police to conduct a detailed investigation in the matter and take strict action against all the accused.
The spokesperson said that a Spanish-Punjabi couple was attacked by some people in Khajjiar a few days ago. In this case, appropriate action will be taken on the basis of information received from Himachal Pradesh Police, Amritsar Police Station.
He said that the people of Himachal Pradesh are known for their simplicity and gentle nature. Every year tourists from different parts of the country and abroad come to visit Himachal Pradesh. The Himachal Pradesh government provides a safe environment to the tourists.
He said that the people of Himachal Pradesh welcome tourists with the spirit of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’. The entire incident took place on June 11, 2024 in the parking lot of hill station Khajjiar, where an altercation between two parties took the form of a fight. Action was taken by the local police administration in this matter. The local police provided all possible help to the tourist couple. The police team reached the spot and took the tourists to Chamba Hospital for first aid. Where the couple refused to undergo medical test and register a case. After this, a compromise was reached by both the parties in the presence of the local police.
