Shimla, July 9: The State Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau took a major action on Tuesday in Dharamshala, the second capital of Himachal Pradesh. An FIR was registered against two media personnel on charges of extortion at the Vigilance Police Station Dharamshala under Section 308 (2) and 3 (5) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS).

According to the complaint, one of the accused, Mrityunjay, introduced himself as a reporter for Khabar Aaj Tak channel and the other accused, Rakesh Bhardwaj, claimed to work for Ajuba Gajab news channel.

Both the accused persons demanded ₹50,000 from the chairmen of two schools in Dharamshala. They threatened the chairmen that if their demand was not met, they would publish false and defamatory news about the schools.

The complainant immediately contacted the Dharamshala unit of the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau. The State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, Dharamshala investigated the veracity of the complaint and on confirmation of the allegations, registered an FIR at the Vigilance Police Station, Dharamshala. After this, a special team was formed, which planned and devised a strategy to catch both the accused red-handed.

The accused persons were caught while they were accepting money from the complainant. ₹25,000 cash and a cheque of ₹25,000 was recovered from each of the accused. Thus, the duo had extorted a total of ₹50,000. The accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody. Further investigation in the case is underway and the police are trying to find out if there are other cases of such extortion linked to the duo.

The incident has raised questions on the ethics and responsibility of media personnel and has once again highlighted the importance of seeking truth in society.

It is worth mentioning that Himachal Pradesh has been flooded with fake journalists in the guise of digital media for a long time.

It is also said that these journalists also put pressure on advertisers. This action of vigilance can be considered very bold and excellent. Digital media is being operated from every nook and corner of Himachal Pradesh. However, the government has also reached the final stage of implementing the digital media policy at its level.
