Hamirpur Mourns: 1971 War Missile Expert Lt. Cmdr. Meghnath Sangal Passes Away in Navi Mumbai

War hero of 1971 Pak war, Veer Chakra Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal of Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh has breathed his last. Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal breathed his last at 6 am on Monday at his private residence in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.
On Tuesday, Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal was cremated with military honors in the presence of military officials of Navy Western Command Mumbai. During the last rites, the funeral pyre of Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal has been lit by his sons Nirankush Sangal and Neeraj Sangal.
Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal was a resident of Jheredi village of Gram Panchayat Bhatera in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh. Lieutenant General Meghnath Sangal completed his primary studies from Government Senior Secondary School, Kangu. Lieutenant General Meghnath joined the Indian Navy as an Electrical Artificer Apprentice at the age of just sixteen. Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal also received special training in missile warfare techniques from the Russian Army in the years 1969 and 1970. Also, Lieutenant General Meghnath Sangal had destroyed the Karachi port by the Indian Navy on 3 December 1971 during the India-Pakistan war. Lieutenant General Meghnath Sangal’s ship INS Nirghat played an important role in the war by firing missiles and destroying two huge ships Shahjahan and Babar in Karachi.

Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal has also been the Deputy Director, Sainik Welfare Department, Shimla, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts in Himachal Pradesh for about five years. Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal was very soft-spoken, gentle and a social worker. The Lieutenant Commander is survived by three sons. Two sons are in Dubai and one is serving as a Captain in the Merchant Navy.
Three days ago, Visakhapatnam Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Hari Kumar inaugurated a complex ‘Meghnath-5’ in the name of Lieutenant General Meghnath Sangal. Lieutenant Commander Meghnath Sangal was also invited as the chief guest for the inauguration of Meghnath-5, but due to ill health, the inauguration of Meghnath-5 complex was done by his son Nirankush Sangal. ‘Meghnath-5’ complex has been built in Visakhapatnam to house the Naval Staff.
