Shimla, July 28: Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla inaugurated the International Minjar Fair at Chamba today with great pomp and traditional splendor. The event began with the hoisting of the Minjar flag and melodious tunes of Kunjdi-Malhar songs. In his address, the Governor emphasized the importance of Minjar Fair in preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh, as well as promoting the values of brotherhood and fraternity. He stressed the need to preserve these cultural traditions for future generations.
The Minjar Fair, an annual event celebrated in Chamba, dates back to the 10th century. It originally marked the end of the monsoon season and the celebration of the harvest. The fair derives its name from the ‘minjar’, a silk tassel symbolizing a corn stalk, which locals wear during the celebration. Over the centuries, the fair has grown into a week-long festival with cultural performances, sporting events, and traditional rituals.
A major highlight of the fair is the grand procession to the Ravi River, where the offerings of Minjar are offered. This colourful procession is accompanied by traditional music and dance, reflecting the vibrant heritage of the region. The Minjar Fair is not only a cultural event but also an important part of Chamba’s identity, attracting visitors from across the state and beyond.
In his speech, Governor Shukla described Minjar Fair as a remarkable example of Himachal Pradesh’s unique identity and cultural richness. “Minjar Fair is a testament to our deep-rooted traditions and cultural heritage. It is essential to preserve these traditions for future generations, as they promote unity and brotherhood among people,” he said.
Governor Shukla also addressed the growing concern of drug addiction in the state and called for collective awareness and action against this menace. “Preservation of our culture and traditions plays a vital role in countering the influence of anti-social elements trying to harm our society,” he said, highlighting the role of cultural events like Minjar Fair in promoting community spirit and resilience.
Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, who attended the Fair along with other dignitaries, was also present. Deputy Commissioner and Fair Committee Chairman Mukesh Repaswal welcomed and felicitated the Governor on behalf of the organizing committee.
As the Minjar Fair progresses through the week, it promises to be a hub of activity, offering a rich array of cultural performances, traditional games and community celebrations. The Fair continues to be a vibrant celebration that honours the past while looking to the future, fostering community spirit and cultural pride in Chamba.
